Please consult the original document though!] Will of John Tart In the Name of God Amen, I John Tart of the District of Marion and State of South Carolina being weak in body. but. of sound disposing mind and memory. do make this my Last Will and Testament. in manner and form following. Imprimis - It is my Will and desire that all my Just Debts be paid - Item - to my beloved wife Nancy Tart I leave one negroe woman Named Betsy., during the term. of her natural life and no Longer. Item - To my sons, James Tart, John G. Tart, Enos Tart, Thomas A. Tart., Roderick Tart, and Jerome Tart, I give and bequeath all the Lands of which I may die psfsfsed, and to which I have any right Title or Claim Each one of my Sons. portion to be afourtained by the Divifsion to be made by three respectable disinterested freeholders. To them their heirs and afsigns forever. Item to my Daughter Mary Odom, I give and bequeath one negroe fellow named Peter, and to her heirs afsign forever. Item to my Daughter Catherine Jones, I give and bequeath one negroe boy named Frank, and to her heirs and afsigns forever. Item, to my Daughter Martha Deer. Deborah and Charlotte and their ____, and out of the proceeds, of their labour, do maintain support, and Educate my Said daughters, until they severally arrive to the age of twenty one years. It is also my further will and desire that. for the Education and support of my three youngest sons. Thomas A Tart, Roderick Tart, and Jerome Tart. that my said Son James Tart do take into his pofssfsion my two negroe fellows Dick and George and out of the profite arrising from their Labour, Execute this my will, until the youngest arrives to the age of twenty one years. that as soon as the youngest arrives to that age, the Said negroes, be equally divided amoungst all my sons, by Sale or otherwise. I also will and desire that after the Death of my Said wife Nancy Tart the negroe woman Betsy shall return to my sons. to be equally divided amoungst them share and share alike. It is also my will and desire that all my household, and Kitchen furniture plantation Tools, all my Stock of Cattle, horses, hogs, sheep and provifsions of Every discription, be sold at public Sale, and the money arrising therefore be equally divided amounst all my said Sons. to wit. TART.-The Tart family was formerly a very noted family at least, in the person of old Enos Tart. There were three brothers of them as known to the writer, Enos, John and Nathan. Of these, Enos was the most prominent ; he lived on, and owned the plantation and mill latterly known as E. J. Moody's. Who the father of these three brothers were, is not known to the writer. When that mill was built, and by whom, is not known. In Gregg's History it is spoken of as "Tart's Mill, about six miles above Marion Court House." It is reasonable to presume it was among the first mills in the county, except, perhaps, "Hulins," on Catfish, afterwards Bass' Mill. (Gregg, p359) The mill was, before the Revolution, the property of John Smith, whose daughter, tradition informs us, was the mother of Enos Tart and brothers. This John Smith was the progenitor of most of the Smiths (numerous) now and since that time in the county.
...Of the brothers of old Enos, John and Nathan, John Tart, I think, married a Miss Crawford; he raised two sons and some daughters; the sons were James and Enos Tart — the name Enos runs down to the present generation in every family. James Tart's brother, Enos, was called "Dog Enos," for distinction. Why they gave him so unsavory a name is not now known. The writer has seen him, or saw him, about sixty years ago ; he was regarded as a bully on the muster fields of that day ; I do not know what became of him. James, the older brother, was a very respectable man and good citizen ; he married Miss Julia Ann Smith, and raised a large family of sons and daughters, all of whom are now dead, except the youngest son, Enos Murchison Tart, who married in Columbus County, N. C, where he settled and now resides. John W. Tart, the oldest son of James, married a daughter of Rev. Samuel J. Bethea, raised a large family of sons and daughters, who are now among us as citizens of the county ; he died on April 14th, 1875, of a cancer on the tongue. A daughter of James Tart, Amelia, married the late John C. Campbell, near Ebenezer Church, where he and she both died a few years ago; they raised a large family of sons, and two daughters, perhaps eight or ten sons. Some of the sons, two or three, are dead, leaving no family, and one of the daughters is also dead, unmarried; the others are among us, and are respectable citizens. James Tart died during the war, on the place near Moody's Mill, now owned by the estate of the late Governor Ellerbe. James Tart had some sisters, two of whom married Birds, Joseph Bird and Hugh Bird, and one married a Malloy— all of whom are dead. ;
