!BIRTH:
The only census record we have for Mrs. Carpenter is the 1830 census wherein she is listed as age 15-19, or born ca 1810/1815. However, the same census lists her husband David in that same age group, but other records show he was older than that, born ca 1806, thus can we trust that her age is accurate on the 1830 census if his isn't?
I would say she was born ca 1810/1815 based only on the 1830 census, but perhaps she was born ca 1800/1810 if closer to David's age. The lack of additional records for her makes this somewhat difficult to work with.
!BIRTHPLACE:
Unfortunately, David Carpenter resided in the border region between Burke, Yancey and Ashe (now Watauga) which means his wife could have come from any of those counties. They married ca 1829, but there are no marriage records for them in Burke or Ashe County. Yancey wasn't created yet when they married. It was formed in 1831 from Burke and Buncombe, thus I should probably also include Buncombe as a possible birth place for her, though it would need be in that part of Buncombe that later became Yancey, much of which became Madison in 1851. I tend to doubt she was from that section though, so I lean towards Burke (Linville area) or Yancey (Toe River / Three Mile Creek) or Watauga (then Ashe) for her origin;
!NAME:
No record of her given name has been found so far.
!MAIDEN NAME:
No record of her maiden name has been found so far. However - I suspect she was a Wilson.
I have no solid proof that the 1st Mrs. David Carpenter was a Wilson. However, consider these tidbits:
1. David Carpenter and wife named their second son "Wilson" Carpenter. Why would they do not if not for a familial connection?
2. David's older brother William married Elizabeth Wilson in 1831, about two years after David married his wife. Was David's wife and William's wife siblings? That is quite common.
3. William Carpenter's wife Elizabeth is a proven child of William Wilson (1777-1847) and Ann Mackey (d 1842). David Carpenter and wife named their 1st son "William". Why? The first born son is sometimes named in honor of one of the grandfathers. David's father was Jacob. Was he named for Mrs. Carpenter's father William?
4. None of the above proves that Mrs. David Carpenter was a Wilson, but it kind of points in that direction.
5. Of course it's also possible that she wasn't a Wilson, but they chose the name for another reason.
6. Hopefully more research will resolve this mystery. DNA evidence does suggest I'm related to Wilsons from Burke/Yancey area.
7. I've concentrated my Wilson research on old Burke (Linville area) and Yancey counties. I've also studied Wilsons in Buncombe since nearby. I've looked at Wilsons in old Ashe, now Watauga since David Carpenter lived there in the 1830s and after.

Miss Wilson would be under 10 (1810/1820) if her age in 1830 is accurate (c1810/1815). Most of the Ashe and Burke county Wilsons had an apparent daughter that age with them in 1820. However, she might been a tad older, so potentially listed in the 10-15 category (1804/1810) or 16-25 (1794/1804). That means numerous suspects. However, we can eliminate some of them if that daughter is already positively identified. My notes are after each entry. The proper match should be at home here in 1820 but gone by 1830, since married ca 1829.

!NOTES:In 1830, David Carpenter was on p. 195 in Burke Co., NC. Also on p. 195 were:
James Wilson, 3 houses from David
Samuel Wilson, 6 houses from David.
Both James and Samuel were sons of William Wilson (1777-1842) and Ann Mackey, parents of Elizabeth Wilson soon to be wife of William Carpenter (m 18331). Thus, they would be William Carpenter's inlaws. Were they also David Carpenters inlaws?

James was the father of Elisha, Isaac and Thomas, I believe. Those three sons all moved to Arkansas before 1850. I didn't find James after ca 1842 in Yancey.
