!OBITUARY:
Garland Samuel Grant Jr., a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Greenville, NC, at the age of 83. Born on December 20, 1942, in Topton, NC, Garland led a life dedicated to his craft and family.
Garland spent his career as a skilled sawfiler, sharing his expertise with numerous sawmills across North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Georgia. His passion for his work was evident to all who knew him, and he took great pride in training others in his field. At home, Garland maintained a saw shop where he repaired saws for many small sawmills in eastern North Carolina. Despite receiving countless offers to share his knowledge beyond the borders of North Carolina and even internationally, Garland cherished his life in his beloved state and chose to remain close to home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garland Grant Sr., his mother, Luella George Grant, his brother, Marvin Alan Grant Sr., and his sister, Luann Grant Meggs.
Garland is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Creech Grant, his brother, Richard Lamar Grant Sr., and his children: son, Garland Samuel "Sonny" Grant III (Brenda), daughter, Kerrie Lanette Grant (Woody), stepson, Richard Alan Denton (Leaster), and stepdaughter, Teresa Denton Clayton (Thomas/TG). He leaves behind cherished memories with his grandchildren: Jamie Keel (Paul), Jonathan Grant, Kaden Grant, Cierra Denton, Tara Clayton Queen (Jason), and Trenton Clayton (Kathryn), as well as his great-grandchildren: Autumn Keel, Sam Keel, Jackson Queen, Jocilyn Queen, Bennett Clayton, and Lainey Clayton.
A celebration of life will be held on January 2, at 2:00pm at the West Belhaven Church of Christ (1080 W Main St Ex, Belhaven, NC 27810).
Garland's legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
